News Item: : Local woman charged with Cruelty to Animals

Plattsburgh City Police Officers investigated reports of abuse, neglect and cruelty to animals at Lakeside Apartments. During the investigation into these reports, officers discovered Janie E. Abernathy, 29, of the 460 Margaret St. apartment complex was housing several cats and one dog. The investigation revealed these animals had not been fed for weeks, kept within the apartment, infested with flees, and lived in a substantial amount of feces that was spread throughout the apartment. Ms. Abernathy was taken into custody and with the assistance of the City of Plattsburgh Building Inspector’s office, the apartment was posted as uninhabitable.
During the collection of the animals from the apartment, officers located eight (8) cats, one of which was deceased and one dog. All the animals in this case were transported to Eagles Nest Veterinary Hospital for medical evaluation. A necropsy on the dead feline will be completed to determine the cause of death.
Ms. Abernathy is being held at the Plattsburgh Police Department awaiting arraignment in Plattsburgh City Court on eight (8) counts of cruelty to animal charges under section 353 of the Agriculture and Markets law of the state of New York, a class “A” misdemeanor.
