On August 18, 2009, at about 9:50 PM, City Police received a report that two Plattsburgh area men were overdue from a boating trip on Lake Champlain. Plattsburgh resident Linda Zeppieri reported to authorities that about 4 PM her son Matthew Zeppieri, age 21 of Plattsburgh launched his 8 foot “Zodiac” inflatable boat with outboard motor from the Old Base Marina to go for a boat ride on Lake Champlain. Matthew’s friend, Robert Peryer, age 20 of Altona, was reported to be with him.
City Police, City Fire and Clinton County Emergency Services set up a command post at the Old Base marina. A coordinated search using land, air and marine assets from the NYS Police, Clinton County Sheriff, Homeland Security and US Coast Guard was conducted of the lake and shoreline areas. Initial reports indicated that the two may have driven the boat to the Port Kent area to visit friends but after about 3 ½ hours of searching the two were located unharmed in Colchester, Vermont where they had run out of gas.
City Police remind the public that Lake Champlain is a large lake and distances are often much greater than they appear. It is important to know your position and where you are going and to file a “float plan” with a friend or relative.
